THE CHARACTER
Character Name: Clark Kent
Series: DCEU
Background: Pretty much all covered here.
Personality: What can you say about Superman? In some ways, it's a bit of a daunting task, this character who's been a part of the cultural landscape in such a major way for almost a century. And there are parts that have maintained and parts that have shifted, parts that are more or less prevalent in different versions.
The Clark of the DCEU is an introvert, a quiet loner as much out of necessity as to some degree preference. He has trouble getting close to people due to the secrecy that was necessary during most of his childhood; despite a quiet warmth and a caring heart, his desire for genuineness wars with his need to maintain certain falsehoods, meaning that people are automatically kept at a certain distance just for safety's sake. He feels, intensely, and sometimes doesn't know what to do with that intensity that won't cause more harm than good, which is why he does his best not to infringe on others. He can be awkward about how he handles conflicts due to an extreme conscientiousness of his own ability to make changes in the world; he spent his childhood reading philosophy trying to figure out the ins and outs of being a moral and decent person because he was so worried about it even though most of his major lessons were learned at home from his very loving, very lovely parents.
He values the people who love him, the ones who know exactly who and what he is and choose to love him anyway. He also values their wisdom and their words, looking to them often when he feels lost or alone. And Clark does feel lost a lot of the time, because caring for everyone, for the whole world, is a confusing and messy business. Because people don't always make sense. Because people hate and do things that are awful and wouldn't know reason or common sense if they bit them. But despite that, he forgives easily and completely, turning the other cheek at the first opportunity, showing trust in people at the drop of a hat. It can, and has, gotten him taken advantage of on occasion, but he keeps doing it. It's a part of him, as much as his blue eyes and black hair: everyone deserves a second chance.
And that's the thing: any number of people have talked about Superman and the greater good, but the fact of the matter is that Clark doesn't believe in 'the greater good'. He doesn't believe in sacrificing anyone but himself to make things better, and he won't turn his back on anyone, even someone who's stolen his mother and waged a shadow campaign against him. Even Batman and Lex Luthor can find their way back to the light and it's his job to help them. It's his job to give them the CHANCE. His last words in Batman vs Superman is about Lois, yes, but it's also about making the world the kind of world he wants to live in. It's about doing what Jor-El said: leading the way to the light.
*huff*
Hokay, in less massive mythicness, Clark's a stubborn git, and he's very good at using his midwestern sweet-faced farm boy charm into making it look like he's not doing just that. But he believes in the integrity and the importance of the press. He believes in making sure that both aspects of his life help people, help the people who need it, the ones that people like to forget about because they aren't glamorous and don't have the money to make their voices heard; he didn't exactly grow up well off, no matter what he can do, and family farming hasn't been a lucrative thing in years. Not to mention that it looks like he's lived on the road out of a duffle bag for a long time. He's not pushy but he is dogged and he'll keep working on a problem until he can take care of it no matter what people say.
His sense of humor is wry and gentle and sly, usually offered in a low key manner such as a soft comment or a raise of an eyebrow at an opportune time. Clark can say a lot with a little, though he also have a lot to say: he became a journalist for more than one reason, after all, and he's got very firm opinions on some things. He's a thoughtful kind of person, picking up treats or flowers or just doing something nice for someone he cares about as a matter of course. He can be a little too thoughtful, with his head *badum ching* in the clouds or his thoughts on something else keeping him from paying attention to certain things, and he can get a bit tunnel vision if something happens to hit a button on him.
I'd also guess, given some of the coping mechanisms shown in the first film (as a child), he has some sensory issues given the overage of information he tends to take in normally. This is a good and a bad thing, because when he knows about it, he can't ignore people who need help if he can do something about it. In small ways, in big ways, he's got to do something and it's cost him ever place he's ever spent time because eventually, something happened and he had to take action. Even in BvS, it might have cost him his job eventually, because he couldn't do the sports feature when there were poor and disenfranchised people living in fear from some bat-ass with a branding fetish. But for all that he has no fear of confrontation, he does have a tendency to see stepping back or walking away as an easy out when he feels overwhelmed and he does feel overwhelmed a lot of the time; some of the more recent comics with him in it have noted that he has anxiety issues and I do think that this is very true of DCEU Clark as well.
He also has a lot of tweak around the idea of belonging; he feels the feel of the immigrant who never knew his homeland, an imposter in both identities, neither truly of Earth nor truly Kryptonian, and the one very sad thing about this incarnation is how little time he got to spend with Jor-El or with Kryptonian technology/information as of this point.
Powers/Abilities: Clark, as a Kryptonian, has:
- Super strength and speed
- The ability to fly and gravitational abilities related to himself and things within a short (couple of inches) distance of him
- Super senses and x-ray vision
- Heat vision
- Freeze breath and super breath
- No need to 'breathe' in space or underwater
- Super resilience and super healing, especially in sunlight
Specific to him, he is actually the holder of the Kryptonian birthing codex, which doesn't seem to do much for him, necessarily, but it is something he's got inside of him.
Inventory: his supersuit, the kryptonian key, his "tough" travel laptop
